Conversation: [announce] Close Indian Point: Action of the Week

Many thanks to those that made calls to the NRC in response to the call to action from Credo. The NRC was its usual comatose self and calling them was not a satisfactory experience.  Still, it is good that they got calls to remind them that real people care about what happens in the Hudson Valley.

Here is an even better idea that several people on the listserv came up with.  We can get extra use from the same language. Use the same message to contact Governor Cuomo. He is up to his ears in the budget and needs to be reminded that we are counting on him to keep his campaign pledge about closing Indian Point as well. The original Credo message to the NRC is posted below.  Use it to

New York: Pull the Plug on Indian Point
Tell the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at 800.368.5642 not to relicense the Indian Point nuclear power plant. A new permit would mean another 20 years of leaks and fish kills. Please read your bill for details.

New York Action

Pull the Plug on Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant

The Indian Point plant takes in 2.5 billion gallons of water from the Hudson River and returns it 16 degrees warmer, which kills a billion fish each year.  In November, oil spilled into the Hudson after an electrical transformer exploded. Moreover, the plant leaks radioactive waste and poses a threat to the 20 million people who live in the vicinity.  The Nuclear Regulatory Commission must soon decide whether to extend the operating permit for the 35-year-old plant's two reactors.  It should not.  A new permit for Indian Point would mean another 20 years of leaks, fish kills and potential disasters.

Tell the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at 800.368.5642 not to relicense the Indian Point nuclear power plant.
