6 REASONS TO WRITE A BOOK, 10 GOOD TYPES

Fellow book coach / writing partner Steve Harrison wrote me an excellent eletter that gives six good reasons to write a book: 1. Generate free publicity.2. Increase sales leads and referrals.3. Obtain speaking engagements.4. Justify higher fees.5. Help your "dream" customer find you.6. Open up new possibllities for your future. His email to me is at my blog,http://douglaswinslowcooper.blogspot.com and it discusses these points as well as detailing the following ten relatively easy books to write: 1. Mistakes to avoid.2. How-to.3. Question / answer.4. # ways to do something.5. How to hire someone.6. Interviews with X, Y, and Z..7. Story collection.8. Memoir or biography.9. Jokes or quotations.10. Your collected writings. Steve's contact information is at my blog [above], but if you and he do not pair up, consider working with me. I'm local, here in Orange County, smart, patient, humorous, capable, and I only charge $25 per week to…See More

PUBLISHING'S "LONG TAIL"

“More nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.”  That need not describe the modern would-be book author. The publishing world has been changing, giving newcomers a greater opportunities for being published, while making it less likely that their books will have large audiences. Let me explain.Imagine creating the following graph: list the books published in the preceding year from 1 to whatever, in the order of their sales for that year, and plot the sales against that rank ordering. The best-selling book’s sales would be plotted high, at position 1, the second-best-selling book’s sales, somewhat less, at the number 2 and so on. The curve would fall continuously, but would go on and on, reaching values just somewhat larger than or equal to one. This kind of curve is said to have a “long tail,” staying above zero much farther than most common mathematical curves would.  There were several hundred thousand new titles published 2010, I have read, and the…See More

MEMOIR / BOOK WRITING COACH FEES

MEMOIR / BOOK WRITING COACH FOR $25 PER WEEK By Douglas Winslow Cooper, Ph.D.      A memoir is the story of your life, as you saw it, as you understood it. It is less formal than an autobiography or a biography. Reasons for writing a memoir include: self-understanding and self-expression, explanations to others, history-preserving, giving thanks. In an earlier blog entry, I have discussed these motivations more fully.      Helping would-be authors is for me a hobby that may become a business. I have decided to charge $25 per week [or $100 per month] for several reasons: 1. People often value what they pay for more than they value what they get for free. 2. Would-be authors who are serious about their writing should be willing to pay this small fee. Those who want more than the initial consultation for free are not as serious and could be wasting my time [and theirs]. 3. My setting aside an hour or two a week [consultations, meetings, proofing, related research] for each author at this…See More

WRITE YOUR MEMOIR WITH A COACH

A memoir is the story of your life, as you saw it, as you understood it. It is less formal than an autobiography or a biography. It tells the truth, not necessarily all the truth. Reasons for writing a memoir include:1. Self-understanding: Some facts will speak for themselves. Some will need interpretation. Some will reveal what was unclear to you then. Some will give you more insight into yourself and into those who influenced you.2. Explanations to others: Your audience can be your spouse, your family, your friends, neighbors, colleagues, the world. You had reasons for the choices you made. Explain them. You learned from the outcomes. Share those lessons. You may want to take credit or accept blame. Do so.3. History: You will not be available forever to tell the stories that deserve to be told. Your memoir lives on. You may choose to add leaves and blossoms to the bare branches of your family tree. An occasional knot-hole or broken limb may deserve mentioning and…See More

Write Your Book --- with Me

Should you write a book? Quite possibly so.Your life is a story that has both triumphs and tragedies, tears and laughter, lessons learned and a few of them re-learned. Family, friends, neighbors, and associates might find your story valuable. You can praise some and criticize others, as appropriate. You can promote values you hold dear.Through modern publishing techniques, a high-quality book can be published more rapidly and less expensively than ever before. Furthermore, the Internet can broadcast your writing to the world, if you choose. How did you start? Where have you gone? Why? What has your family done, enjoyed, endured? If you have traced your ancestry, who were your ancestors and what did they do? How has your past shaped your present? These are possible avenues to explore in your book. Once finished, it will be available not only to this generation but others to follow.A second type of book you could write would be one about your business or profession. Your book can be even…See More
